RAFOS Float
RAFOS floats are used to track the ocean currents over a wide area and for statistical studies of dispersion and mixing. The drifting RAFOS float listens and records acoustic signals from stationary acoustic sound sources. The acoustic information is used to calculate the position of the float. At the end of the pre-programmed mission, the float drops a weight, floats to the surface, and transmits data back to the user over a satellite link. Typical missions run from one to two years.
